Fosen Fjordhotell - The History
1905
Niels Berg started his trading business here, where the hotel stands today, in 1875. The sale of Åfjord boats — up to 1,000 a year at its peak — drew people to Årnes. The visitors needed both coffee and a bed, and in 1886 a coaching station was established here.
1920
Årnes flourished as a trading center, and in 1918 Berg built a new shop with guest rooms on the second floor. Årnes Guesthouse operated until the building was struck by a dramatic fire on August 30, 1963.
1968
The owners at the time, Egil and Gurine Selnes, built the new Åfjord Tourist Station on the site, completed in 1967. The tourist station featured hotel rooms, a motel wing, a café and restaurant, and a large banquet hall in the basement — the village’s new gathering place.
2025
The need for upgrades and expansion led to the new Fosen Fjord Hotel. It was completed in 1990 with more hotel rooms, new meeting facilities, and the Sonja Suite — Queen Sonja’s favorite — located in the lower floor with direct access to the riverbank at the salmon paradise Stordalselva. The hotel is once again locally owned and operated by hosts who know the community well.
